To make a long story short: It's hard to say how much you need because I don't know your diet but if you do want to supplement with whey protein powder as a convenient way to increase your protein intake, I would recommend 40 grams of whey protein in a shake. This should be around 50 grams of powder depending on the product. Note that this is almost double the dose that is recommended for younger people but for the reasons mentioned above, it is advisable to get a tad more for seniors.
As for the timing, this is subject of many a debate and largely irrelevant for the recreational athlete so I would focus on a point in time that works for you. Many people get in their shake after a workout. Would that work for you? Maybe bring it in your gym bag?
